Two Traders, Visitor Killed As Winds Blow Off Bazaar Ramadan Tents
JASIN, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Two traders and a visitor were killed and 18 other people were injured when gale-force winds blew off almost all the 30 tents of the Bazaar Ramadan in the compound of the Jasin Stadium here Friday evening.
Jasin police chief DSP Che Suza Che Hitam identified the traders as "murtabak" seller Mahadi Mohamad, 40, of Kampung Gong Merang, Terengganu, and "cendol" seller Abdul Omar, 73, of Air Merbau here while the visitor as Muhammad Wahab, 49, from Kampung Rim, Jasin.
He said they were badly injured in the head when struck by the steel supports of the 20 ft by 20 ft tents in the incident at about 5pm.
Che Suza said Abdul died at the scene, Mahadi at Hospital Jasin and Muhammad at the Melaka Hospital.
He also said that three of the 18 injured people had been hospitalised, one at Melaka Hospital, one at Jasin Hospital and one at the Putra Specialist Hospital near here.
"The 15 others were given outpatient treatment at Jasin Hospital," he said.
A trader who escaped injury, Farim Rosli, 32, said the winds blew off almost all the 21 tents.
"The winds came all of a sudden. I managed to avoid being hit by the steel supports as the traders and customers ran for cover," he said.
"In my seven years of trading here, this is the first time I have experienced such strong winds," said Farim, who is from Kampung Air Merbau.
A customer, Fatimah Hassan, 32, said a crowd of people was busy buying food for breaking of the fast when the winds struck.
"There was panic as everyone ran for cover. I was almost hit by a steel support," she said.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, Jasin Member of Parliament Datuk Ahmad Hamzah, Merlimau State Assemblyman Datuk Mohamad Hidir Abu Hassan and Sungai Rambai State Assemblyman Hassan Rahman visited the injured.
